Let's start from something shocking:

file name: "gauss.max" (3dsmax format)

So, yes - I was working on this scene for almost a year :D

Something about the weapon:
The idea was that the projectile is firstly accelerated by the explosion (that's why pyro-), which also punches a big piece of piezoelectric material (blue thing). The vast amount of energy is stored in the capacitors (red things) and then it's transfered to the coils (orange things) at a proper moment (that's why -gauss).
Oh, sometimes my technical imagination overtakes me :D

I made all the textures and lighting last week. There are 5 lights - the most complicated setup I've ever used. The textures are mainly procedural, with only 2 bitmaps in the whole scene :P

Rendertime: ~3-4 hours.

A duel stage system makes alot of sense. You could use rocket propelled secondary stage to either reduce the power needs the of the weapon & also its great size. Or you could instead use to further accelerate the projectile/increase range and damage all.at once!
